Successful business owners know that growth and success isn’t about doing more, it’s about doing the right things, in the right way. As a Solopreneur myself (I’ve had three businesses in 27-years) I support other Solo and small business owners as a Business Mentor. To do this effectively I’ve developed and refined my approach to ‘doing the right things’ into my 5Ps Framework. The first step is aways to discover which of the 5Ps may be holding you back.
What is The 5Ps Framework?
In a nutshell, the 5Ps Framework is a practical, proven approach that helps business owners understand how all the moving parts of their business interconnect.
It’s a simple but powerful way to focus your time and energy on the five things that really drive progress:
- People
- Product
- Price
- Promotion, and
- Productivity
Whether you’re just finding your feet or already thriving, mastering the 5Ps will give you the insight, balance, and momentum to keep moving forward with purpose and profit.
However, many Solopreneurs tend to focus in one, narrow area: “I need to do more marketing.”
This means they may spend their time (and money) posting on social media, tinkering with their website or designing a new lead magnet in Canva – all in the hope of getting more customers through the door.
But marketing is only one-fifth of the picture.
What Solopreneurs and small business owners need – apart from big dreams, brilliant ideas and bags of determination – is:
BALANCE
The Promotion Trap
It’s no wonder many business owners are out of balance and focus so much of their time and energy on marketing and promotion. It’s what all the shouting and noise is about.
Scroll through social media and you’ll see endless “I made six figures on TikTok” stories and marketing hacks promising overnight success.
This method looks at the whole business, not just the flashy front bits, so you can build something that feels solid, successful, and sustainable.
The truth is, it’s easy to think more marketing is the answer when no one’s ever shown you how the rest of your business fits together. But business isn’t just one piece.
Business is a jigsaw, and promotion is only one part of that bigger picture.
That’s where the 5Ps Framework comes in
It’s a simple but powerful model that I have developed that brings success to the business owners I work with – just take a look at my Case Studies to see how effective it is.
Unfortunately, it’s completely normal to fall into the Promotion Trap.
Marketing feels visible, exciting and gives you the sense you are doing something positive to get more customers and sales. It’s the part everyone sees (maybe?!) You post, you engage, you create. It feels like progress.
But picture this … imagine shouting about a brand-new product that isn’t quite clear or pricing your service too low because you’re unsure what people will pay. You might get attention, but not sales, or worse, sales that don’t actually make you money.
That’s the Promotion Trap in action: when you’re constantly promoting, but something deeper isn’t quite working.
To grow confidently and profitably, you need all five areas of your business to work in harmony. When one wobbles, everything else shakes.
The Power of the 5Ps Framework
Here’s how the 5Ps help you find your balance:
People – These are your customers, clients, and community. Do you really know who they are, what they value, and what problem you solve for them? When you get clear on your ideal customers, everything else starts to align — your messaging, your offers, even your pricing.
Product – This is what you sell: your products, programmes, or services. Are they packaged clearly? Do they make sense to your customers? So many Solopreneurs have amazing products and skills but struggle to turn them into easy-to-buy, repeatable offers.
Price – Ah, the tricky one! Pricing is where confidence and strategy collide. It’s not just about covering costs; it’s about understanding value, positioning, and profitability. Price too low and you’re exhausted; price too high without the right message, and customers hesitate.
Promotion – This is how you attract and connect with customers. It’s everything from word-of-mouth to social media to email marketing, but remember, it’s not the only place to spend your time (and money). Good promotion builds on solid People, Product, and Price foundations.
Productivity – The behind-the-scenes hero. Productivity covers systems, processes, habits, and time management. When this P is strong, everything runs smoother, leaving you more headspace to think strategically instead of firefighting.
When you give attention to all five, you move from busy to balanced, and that’s when real business growth happens.
The 5 Solopreneur Types (A Little Tease!)
To help you see which P might be holding you back, I created a simple 2-minute, 8-question quiz. It’s quick and surprisingly accurate.
Your result reveals which area needs your attention the most and gives you a practical toolkit to strengthen it.
You’ll meet one of five Solopreneur types (I won’t spoil them all here!), but you might recognise yourself in one of these:
- Over-Doer who’s always busy but rarely feels productive
- Underseller who delivers amazing value but struggles to charge confidently
- Idea-Machine who starts lots of projects but finishes few
- Hider who avoids promotion because it feels awkward
- Juggler who’s trying to do everything, all at once, all the time
Any of this sound familiar?
You’re not alone, every Solopreneur fits into one (or more!) of these from time to time. The good news? Once you know which one you are, you can fix the imbalance and get your business flowing.
Why the 5Ps Work So Well
The beauty of this framework is that it’s not theory — it’s practical.
Each P feeds the others. When you strengthen one, you naturally strengthen the rest.
For example:
- Clarifying your People helps you design a better Product
- Raising your Price boosts confidence and improves Productivity (because you’re not chasing every lead or you can afford to pay someone else to do the admin!)
- Getting organised behind the scenes frees up time to Promote more consistently
Think of it like a set of cogs; when they all turn smoothly, the business moves forward without grinding or groaning.
Ready to Find Out Which P Is Holding You Back?
If you’ve been feeling stuck, scattered, or unsure where to focus next, this quiz is your first step towards clarity.
It’s quick to complete, it’s full of lightbulb moments, and it gives you a personalised toolkit packed with practical next steps to strengthen your weak spot.
So, go on, grab a cuppa, take five minutes, and find out which of the 5Ps may be holding your business back.
Because when you understand where your gaps are, you can stop guessing and start growing with confidence.
