We’ve all been there, you post something on Facebook, Instagram, TIK Tok (your social of choice!), it gets some likes and comment (or even lots of likes and lots of comments)but your bank balance stays exactly the same. How do you turn social media engagement into loyal customers?
It’s time to flip the script.
Engagement is great, but what you really need is engagement that leads to customers; people who come back time and time again.
Let’s take a look at some ideas about how you can make that happen.
Organic vs Paid: Know the Difference
First up, let’s clear up organic vs paid social media.
Organic posts are the everyday posts you share for free – your tips, behind-the-scenes, stories and updates. They build trust and show your personality and are brilliant for nurturing your existing audience and turning followers into fans.
Paid posts (Ads) are when you spend money to reach people who don’t follow you yet,. They help you boost your reach so more of your followers actually see you (the joy of algorithms!). Paid can be a game-changer for growing your audience fast or promoting a specific offer.
The Key Takeaway Here Organic content builds relationships. Paid content increase reach. Having said that, if your organic stuff isn’t engaging, spending money on ads won’t magically make people buy.
What Does ‘Engagement’ Actually Mean?
Engagement isn’t just a quick ‘like’ as someone scrolls past. True engagement means someone is genuinely interested in what you do and they:
- Comment and chat with you
- Share your post to their feed or stories
- Click through to your website
- Save your post for later
- Reply to your stories or DMs
This is the kind of interaction that warms people up to buy from you. Therefore, aim for posts that invite real conversations, not just double-taps.
How to Create Posts That Convert
Here’s how to turn that interaction into actual customers:
1. Write for Real People
- Keep it simple and friendly; talk like you’re chatting over coffee
- Be helpful: share quick wins, tips, and behind-the-scenes moments
- Show your personality — people buy from people they like and trust
Here’s a Bad Example:
“Special offer on my products. Click the link.”
Why is it bad? Well, it’s really vague and totally forgettable.
Here’s a Good/Better Example:
“Running out of gift ideas? Here’s why my hand-poured candles make the perfect treat: they’re eco-friendly, locally made, and they smell divine! Comment your favourite scent below”
Why is it better? It’s relatable, descriptive and actually tells people what to do by inviting comments.
2. Use Strong Calls to Action (CTAs)
- Tell people exactly what to do next: “Click here”, “Comment below”, “DM me for details”.
- Make it clear and easy. Every post should have a purpose. If you can’t think of anything to post, it’s better not to post (please save me from the “It’s Humpday, what are you looking forward to in the second half of this week?” post because someone feels they have to fill some airtime!)
Here’s a Bad Example
“Check out my new service.”
Why is it bad? There’s absolutely no reason to care, no next step and no link. The reader is expected to do all the hard work!
Here’s a Good/Better Example:
“Spending too much time guessing what your prices should be? Let’s fix that! Click the link to grab my free pricing guide and start charging what you’re worth today”
Why is it better? It addresses a specific problem, offers a solution and has a clear CTA.
3. Mix Up Your Post Types
Keep your feed fresh by sharing a variety of post types:
- Tips and how-tos
- Real-life stories or client wins
- Interactive posts (polls, questions)
- Special offers or promotions
- Customer testimonials or user-generated content
This keeps your audience interested and shows you’re active and trustworthy, not just shouting ‘Buy now!’.
When to Use Paid Ads
Paid ads can be brilliant when used wisely. Consider using ads when:
- You want to quickly grow your audience
- You have a time-sensitive promotion or launch
- You want to build your email list with a lead magnet or freebie
But remember, throwing money at a weak post won’t help. Make sure your organic content is strong first, then promote the good stuff.
Relationships First, Sales Second
At the end of the day, social media is about building real relationships not just chasing quick sales. When people trust you, they buy from you, they tell their friends, and they come back for more. You need to be:
- Consistent
- Helpful
- Genuine.
Turn your social media into a two-way conversation then watch those likes become loyal customers.
Next Steps
To start thinking a little more strategically about what you are doing with your social media, here’s a little task for you…
- Review your last five posts: do they invite real interaction? What was the outcome in terms of engagement? Did any turn into conversations or customers?
- Plan your next three posts: what story, tip or question are you going to share? What will be a good outcome for you in terms of engagement on these posts?
Use the comments box below to let me know the outcome.
