When Plans Go Pear-Shaped: How to Reset Business Goals Without Guilt

We all start the year with big plans, don’t we? Fresh notebooks, colour-coded calendars, a head full of ideas and ambition. But what happens when those plans go pear-shaped and you find yourself months into the year without reaching those targets? So, how do you reset business goals without feeling guilty (or worse, feeling like you’ve failed in some way)?

Well, life happens!

Whether it’s tech tantrums, surprise client demands, health stuff, or just pure exhaustion, those lovely new-year intentions can easily end up shoved to one side while you juggle the day-to-day.

So, if you’ve found yourself a few months into the year wondering where the time went (or why your to-do list looks suspiciously like it did in January), you are not alone.

In fact, you’re in very good company. I’m right there with you!

Let’s take a step back and have a bit of a reset. Maybe a little pep talk, and a reminder that you don’t need to feel guilty, embarrassed, or behind. You just need a fresh start — on your terms.

When Things Go Off Track (and Why That’s Totally Normal)

Here’s the thing most people won’t admit: everyone’s plans go sideways sometimes.

You can have the clearest strategy, the prettiest planner, and the best intentions and still get knocked off course.

That doesn’t mean you’re bad at business, here’s what that means …

It means you’re human and that you’re running a real business, not a perfectly curated Instagram version of one!

The thing that took me off-track this year was a website refresh that turned into a DIY rescue mission. I’d hired professionals to give it a facelift over Christmas… and let’s just say, it didn’t quite go to plan. I ended up rebuilding it myself — which took weeks of unexpected time, energy, and swearing at my PC.

The important thing?

I kept going.

And now, I’m picking back up with the parts of my business that had to go quiet while I sorted things out — like this blog.

Reset Your Business Goals Without Guilt

When things go off track, it’s easy to fall into “all-or-nothing” thinking. The idea that if you didn’t stick to the plan perfectly, it’s not worth continuing at all.

But that mindset helps no one.

What if, instead, you gave yourself permission to reset?

No guilt, no shame and no starting from scratch. Just picking up the thread again.

Here’s what I recommend:

Step 1: Get honest about where you are. No judgement. Just look at your current reality. What’s been working? What’s slipped? What needs a rethink?

Step 2: Reconnect with your priorities. What actually matters for you and your business right now? It might not be the same as it was in January — and that’s totally OK.

Step 3: Choose one thing to restart. Don’t try to catch up on everything. Just pick one thing that will move you forward. For me, that one thing is this blog — reconnecting with you and getting back into my content flow.

Why Your Fresh Start Might Actually Be Better Than the Original Plan

Time for a lovely little reframe:

Starting again now, a few months into the year, might actually be better than sticking to your original plan.

Why? Because now, you’ve got:

  • More clarity about what works and what doesn’t
  • A better sense of how much time and energy things really take
  • Fresh insight into what your audience actually needs

REFRAME YOUR THOUGTHS: YOU ARE NOT BEHIND, YOU ARE WISER; YOU ARE NOT FLAKY, YOU ARE FLEXIBLE.

And that’s what running a sustainable, successful business really looks like.

So… What’s Next?

For me, this blog is the first domino.

Each week from now, I’ll be sharing a new post diving into the core areas solopreneurs like us need to focus on — starting with next week’s post Your Ideal Customer: How to Attract the Right Clients for Your Business

[A LITTLE TEASER…] I’ve also created a free worksheet to help you get crystal clear on your dream clients, so you can stop trying to appeal to everyone, and start connecting with the right people (the ones who pay well, value what you do, and are lovely to work with).

Final Thought

If you’re hitting reset this week — whether it’s your blog, your pricing, your focus, or your mindset — know this:

You haven’t failed. You’re just taking the scenic route.

The great thing about being a Solopreneur is that you get to decide what your business looks like. And if that includes a few detours, wobbles, or wonky starts, that just makes you real, relatable and resilient as hell.

If you want to talk about any of this, here’s a link to book a one-to-one conversation.

P.S. If you’re resetting your business goals too. I’d love to hear from you. Drop a comment below or send me a message and let me know what you’re picking back up. We’re in this together.
